Four 2021 Beauty Trends

I think most of us are happy to see the back of 2020. Here are some 2021 makeup trends we can look forward to.

1. Pantone's 2021 Colours of the Year are Ultimate Grey and Illuminating yellow. Expect to see these colours in nail polishes, eye shadows and eyeliners. A report by WSGN predicts that the colour Al Aqua (blue) will be popular with blue mascara, technicolour lashes and blue stripes in hair.

2021 COLOURS

2. Dewy skin , natural skin and lighter bases/foundation  According to Tery Barber (MAC Cosmetic’s Director of Makeup Artistry) " People want their foundation and concealer products to look like their skincare." So look out for skin tints and BB creams.

3. Eyes will still be the focus due to mask wearing. Past fashions such as 50's flicked eyeliner, 60's lashes, 70's and 80's jewelled eye shadows as well as the sultry eyes seen in 00's will make a appeareance in the year ahead. Long lasting formulas will be popular because it will elimate the need to touch our faces while re-applying makeup. I'm all for long wearing formulas I either forget to reapply or sometimes too lazy lol!

Brands will expand their eyeliner range with brighter colours to match your masks. Multi-chromatic eye shadows will be trending, a fashion set by Pat McGrath Labs in her Divine Rose II palette. Other examples are the Danessa Myricks Beauty Twin Flames , Ciaté London's Shadow Flip.    Nabla Cosmetics,  JD Glow Cosmetics, and Karla Cosmetics.

4. Embellishments/ Euphoria. Face stamps, stickers and gems are predicted to be big this coming year. According to Pinterest, searches for "butterfly eye makeup" was up six times. If you prefer to decorate your nails rather than the face then take some inspiration from pintrest who found that searches for "indie nails" were up 21 times year-on-year, while "smiley face nails" were up nine times (fyi you can get the smiley face stickers from Ciate)

Cheers to a better year ahead for all of us!

Sleek Cleopatra's Kiss Highlighting Palette Review

Sleek's Cleopatra's Kiss highlighter palette contains four highlighter shades: two powder shades in rose gold and pink and two cream shades in bronze and gold. The palette also comes with a small black flat brush, but I've been using my fingers to apply the cream highlighters and a large fluffy eye shadow blush for the powder highlighters. The gold packaging gives it a luxurious feel and the palette is quite compact and therefore it's easy to travel with.

This palette is quite glittery, so if you're not a fan of glitter this isn't the palette for you. The pink powder highlighter is basically silver glitter without any colour pigment to it. The gold cream highlighter looks like a champagne gold in the swatch but is actaully a true yellow gold and doesn't have much pigment just gold glitter. The bronze and rose gold shades show up well but they are quite similar in colour. The cream highlighters are marketed as lightweight and they do feel creamy and lightweight on the skin.

sleek highlighting palette cleopatra's kiss swatches

Sleek's highlighting palettes are popular but I've always steered away from them as the cream highlighters contain ozokerite wax, which isn't bad or toxc in anyway but I've found that when it's in cream blushers it makes the red patches on my cheeks sting. However since highlighters are generally placed higher up than blusher this wasn't a problem.

I think £9.99 is a good price for a four shade highlighter palette with a mix of different textures  but I wouldn't choose this one because of the glitter and the lack of pigment. The bronze and rose gold show up well but they are similar in colour. Using these shades means I would only use 50% of the palette on a regular basis. I would recommend you buy the Sleek Face Contour Kit instead, while you only get one highlighter it's a lovely champagne gold that's pigmented and free from glitter. As for Sleek's Highlighter palette in Cleopatra's Kiss -I do think that ther are better highlighter palettes on the market.

Christmas Shopping at UK Black Owned Businesses

White and gold christmas tree

This year I've compilied a Christmas gift guide from UK, black owned small businesses. The most direct and sustainable ways to support the Black community is to shop at Black-owned businesses, this will help keep some small businesses afloat, strengthen the commuity and help you discover brands you wouldn't otherwise have heard about and find unique presents. During my research I'm glad that I found out about Sancho's Shop which sells sustainable and ethical fashion and found other brands to support over Christmas and beyond.

ONLINE GIFT SHOPS & HOMEWARE

Kazvare Made it

This is a London-based “illustration lab” that sells pop culture influenced prints, books and homeware online. Their products have been sold in stores such as  Oliver Bonas and Scribbler. This adult colouring book would make a good gift for a dog lover.

KitsCH Noir

Cherelle started out designing and selling greeting cards that 'uplift and celebrate the beauty of a more inclusive and diverse society.' Since then the business has become a multi- award winning brand that has been stocked in Paperchase and Moonpig and now sells notebooks, note pads, prints and cotton lunchbags! I think that this 2021 Affirmation Diary would make a nice present to a young pre-teen/teenager.

Avila.diana

Avila.diana is a greeting store that also has a section selling prints, notebooks and mugs. If you know anyone who is a nurse then lookout for the 'Phenomenal Women Collaboration' which has two prints to choose from. ( the prints say 'women' on them so just a warning if you wanted a gift for a male nurse. )

Self made Candle

Founded by Ricki Lawa, his shop sells candles that are vegan-friendly, soy candles that are hand-poured in London. What makes them stand out is that the label on the candles contain plant seeds and once you're done with the candle you can use the empty glass jar to plant the seed and watch it grow!  They have created a limited edition ‘Conscious’ candle which is fragranced with geranium essential oil to help de-stress and descrease anxiety. The candle retails at £24 and £5 from every candle sold is donated to the Black Minds Matter UK charity. They also sell candle making kits too!

Finding Eve's Roots

If you're looking for affordable prints then this Etsy store is the place for you. These minimalsitic inspired prints range from £6-£24 with the majority priced at £6-£8.

ONE STOP ONLINE SHOPS

Yard and Parish

Yard and Parish sells jewellery, clothing, beauty and homeware. They have a lovely Self Care Discovery box (£49.99) which contains a Minzaani Shea Sucre Lip scrub and body butter, a Tanaka handmade Earle Grey, Bergamot and Cardamom soap, a candle from Liha and a gold rimmed trinklet plate from Afton by Palm. Also check out Line and Honey, they have a gorgeous lounge satin line art scarf (£25) as well as this minimalistic Eyes to the Sun print (from £18) . I also love these Spiral Omi earrings from Relic London they are made from gold plated silver with a simulated pearl (£30.)

Sancho's Shop The Home of Sustainable Fashion

If you are after an ethical and sustainble gift then Sancho's  is the place to shop. This brass 4 ring stack (£14)  are handmade by Bombolulu, a social enterprise in Kenya who not only create beautiful jewellery but provide opportunities for people with physical disabilities. The rings are nickle free. Another option are these  unisex lioness t-shirts (£22) which are made from 100% fair trade organic cotton and are available in black and white from size XXS-XXL. Alternatively slippers make such a cozy, practial gift and these Egos slippers (£39) are handmade using pure new wool and eco friendly dyes. They are designed in Denmark and made ethically in Nepal. They have a double sole to be extra comfortable, They come in blue, black, dusky rose and natural grey. If you're looking for a pampering gift then this Organic Soothing Aphrodite Facial oil by Magic Organic Apothecary (£28) may fit the bill. It is a blend of hydrating rosehip oil, damask rose, yarrow and geranium. Rosehip is rich in antioxidants and fatty acids which help to restore skins elasticity, calm redness, irritation and protect against environmental stress that can lead to age spots, fine lines and wrinkles.

Ebonyx  describes itself as an Afrocentric marketplace, a hub for African goods and inspiration.

I love this Vive Con Style  'Progress not Perfection' note book (£14.99) because this mantra sets realistic, motivating goals for study or work. I love it so much I'm going to pick one up! This sustainable handmade back pack from Kirosha Krochet (£65)  is made from recycled t-shirt yarn and PU leather. If you're looking at jewellery then this flags of Africa necklace (£14.44) from Isura Jewellery is made from gold plated stainless steel with a 45cm (18″) chain that you could layer with other gold necklaces. If you're buying for someone who's into vegan beauty then  The Mango Girl bundle (£45.97) may be the answer. The bundle contains a toner and anti aging face mask and serum. The Rose Aloe toner is rich in Vitamin C to brighten and tone the skin. The anti-aging serum is blended with carrot infusion and aims to stimulate collagen production and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The face mask contains green tea to help reduce the signs of premature ageing by improving the elasticity of the skin. It also contains cucumber, watermelon and apple extracts. On orders over £25 Ebonyx will donate to the Deworm the World Initiative.

KIDS

Our Kids Trove

This online store was set up by Pamela who felt it was important for children to have access to toys and dolls that are culturally diverse to represent, educate and empower children. They sell teddies and elephants made from African print fabric, dolls that are bi-racial/mixed, black, white with red hair or have viligo (which I imagine would start a coversation explaining and educating what the the skin condition was.) They also sell books, quizes, puzzles and games.

Mythical Canvas

This store sells plimsols that can be decorated with fabric pens. The founder David feels that art is important for developing children's creativity and confidence. He wanted to convey the message that ‘there are no mistakes in art.' Plimsol packs include stencils, fabric pens, straps and white canvas shoes which currently retail at £22-£25.

Imagine Me Stories

Imagine Me stories sells children's books in which black and ethnic children are represented. The founder wanted to see that "every child grows up seeing their realities reflected in books and that all children are able to read diverse stories about different experiences." They also have a book subscription service and one off boxes.

FASHION

Everyday Froyo

Everyday Froday sells lots of cool slogan tees and sweatshirts, such as "I am my ancestor’s wildest dreams” “ powered by jollof!" and "Stay Woke" (£24.99) below.

Maroon Dawta

Maroon Dawta sells African inspired t-shirts with prices that range from £14-17. I like the unisex Balance T-shirt below (£17) it's available in black and navy with sizes ranging from S-3XL.

Inoir

Inoir sells sporty, shapewear clothes. Some tops have a Calvin Klein/Armour/ millennials aesthetic and others feature African prints.

SPECIAL MENTION Alero Jasmine I love the clothes that they sell but since everything is sold out at the moment you need to wait for a restock.

JEWELLERY

Omolola jewellery

Faetured in Cosmoplitan, Omo Lola Jewellery is a sustainble business selling afforable, modern jewellery. They also have the popular gold cowie shell earrings  that are sold out everywhere else on sale!

Cowie Shell Hoop Earrings £3.30  /  Gold Cowrie Shell Earrings £14.50 / Bola Earrings £16.50

Thea Smartt Henry

Thea Smartt Henry makes jewellery from polymer clay. She likes expiermenting with the different textues she can make, so pieces may look like they are made stone, metal and china. Her style is modern/ artsy, some are influenced by batik patterns, bubbles, stone and flowers.

TV Shows & Films To Watch This Halloween

Halloween films & TV shows
Celebrate Halloween by watching a scary movie or by binge watching a supernatural T.V. show. Here  are my picks for the best scary films and T.V. shows. Grab your popcorn and let's get started.

The Classics

Scream (1996) (Amazon Prime/itunes /Dvd)

A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorised by a new killer who uses horror film quizzes as part of a deadly game. This is a satirical slasher film, something that was quite groundbreaking and unusual at the time.

Psycho (1960) (Amazon Prime/itunes/Dvd)

A secretary called Marion embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client and goes on the run. When she stops for the night at the ramshackle Bates Motel she meets the polite but highly strung owner Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) He is controlled by his mother and doesn't have a life of his own. However something bad befalls Marion during her motel stay.

Crooked House (Netflix/Amazon Prime)

Crooked House is based on Agatha Christie's novel. The story begins with the death of business tycoon Aristide Leonides. His granddaughter Sophia asks Charles Hayward, a private investigator to look into the matter because she believes he was murdered by a family member. Sophia describes Aristide's regular insulin injection had been laced with eserine from his eye drops which caused a fatal heart attack. She believes this was deliberate, not accidental.

TV shows

The Haunting of Hill House (Netflix)

When a family move into a big, old mansion in order to flip it over the summer they did not expect the house to be filled with malevolent forces. The Haunting of Hill House slowly draws you into the story and shows the lasting trauma on each member of the family and the family dynamics. The children are really good actors and I liked the fact that while most horror plots focus on the scary thing in the here and now, this show illustrates the lasting consequences of the trauma which gives the plot more depth. I've finished watching this so I'll be watching The Haunting of Bly Manor next which features a lot of the same cast although the characters and plot are different.

Stranger Things (Netflix)

Stranger Things is mixture of sci-fi and horor. Set in the 80's the show begins with the disappearance of a boy called Will Byers. At the same time a girl called Eleven escapes from a laboratory and she teams up with Will's friends to use her psychokinetic powers to find Will. The search party that follows has to fight terrifying, supernatural forces to get Will back.

The Sinner (Netflix)

For some reason I've only watched the third season but it's a good show.  Bill Pullman is  a police detective who investigates crimes committed by unlikely culprits and attempts to uncover the culprits' motivations.

The Vampire Diaries (Netflix/Amazon Prime)

Elena (Nina Dobrev) and her brother Jeremy are living with their aunt because their parents were recently killed in a car crash. On the first day of high school she is intrigued by a new boy, Stefan. Stefan is actually a vampire and he is drawn to Elena because she looks like the love of his life Katherine, a vampire from his past. Stephan's brother Damon returns trying to create chaos because he hates that Stephan turned him into a vampire against his will. They eventually make up and Elena begins dating Stephan but then she becomes attracted to Damon. She is torn between the two brothers. When Mystic Falls attracts various supernatural beings including Katherine the brothers try to protect Elena. I love the love triangle and find the romance and story more compelling that Twilight (please don't hate me!) I also love the music score as well.

The Originals (Netflix/Amazon Prime)

A spin-off from The Vampire Diaries, this show focuses on the Mikaelson family who are the earliest and the original vampires. The power hungry Mikaelsons move to New Orleans and form an alliance with local witches in order to rule the city once again.

Locke and Key (Netflix)

After Rendell Locke is murdered, his wife Nina decides to move her children Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode to his ancestral estate Keyhouse. The children soon discover a number of mysterious keys throughout the house that can be used to unlock various doors in magical ways.  However they soon become aware of a demonic force that is also searching for the keys for its own evil purposes.

The Chilling Tales of Sabrina the Teenage Witch (Netflix)

This reincarnation of Sabrina the Teenage Witch is a lot darker than the original 90's sitcom featuring Melissa Joan Hart. This show opens with Sabrina turning 16, the time for her 'dark baptism.' The dark baptism means pledging her loyalty to the Dark Lord Satan. Sabrina is conflicted as she has to choose between her family and their dark legacy and the 'normality' of Baxter high school and her friends. In season one she tries to balance her two worlds, being half-witch and half-mortal all while fighting the evil forces that threaten her family and friends. In season two she embraces her 'witch' side by deciding to attend the Academy for Unseen Arts full time. However a prophecy about Sabrina shakes the foundation of the Church and her relationship to the dark lord.

Dexter  (Amazon Prime/ itunes/ Sky Atlantic)

Dexter was left orphaned at age 3, when his mother was brutally murdered with a chainsaw by drug dealers. He was adopted by police officer Harry Morgan. When Harry discovers Dexter's sociopathic tendancies he tries to control them by only letting him kill the criminals who slip through the justice system. Dexter has a double life as he also works at the Miami Police department as a blood splatter analyst. This job gives him a cover story but he finds it hard juggling his double life. If you like gory, thriller stories this is the show for you.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Channel  4 On Demand / Amazon Prime)

One of the best things to come out of the '90's (beside Friends) is Buffy. Buffy (Sarah Michelle Geller) is a high school student destined to slay vampires, demons and other supernatural creatures. Librarian Giles is her 'watcher' who gives Buffy advice and direction. With his help and the help of her friends Willow and Xander she protects Sunnydale. The Sunnydale high school also happens to be on the hellmouth, the crux of evil. If you fancy a laugh check out the original Buffy The Vampire film (1992) starring Donald Sutherland and Kristy Swanson.

Kids & Family films

Halloween Tv shows and films to watch this halloween

The Witches (1990/2020 ( itunes/DVD)

I know that this film has been remade with Anne Hathaway which you can watch now on itunes. This film is based on Roald Dahl's book 'The Witches' and he kind of ruled as a children's author in the  80's and 90's. I remenber watching the original film as a child and found it really scary but not too scary if you know what I mean. The film is about a boy called Luke who stumbles onto a witch convention in a hotel and tries to stop them even when he has been turned into a mouse.

Corpse Bride (2005) (Netflix/Amazon Prime/itunes)

I've only recently watched this and loved it. It's animated, musical film directed by Tim Burton, the king of all things spooky. Victor Van Dort, the son of wealthy fish merchants is bethrothed to Victoria Everglot, the daughter of impoverished aristocrats. Their arranged marriage will raise the social class of Victor's parents and restore the wealth of Victoria's family. Although both fall in love with each other, Victor ruins their wedding rehearsal by forgetting his vows. When Victor is nervously practicing his wedding vows outside, he inadvertently awakens a young woman from her grave. She believes that her fiance is here at last and that they are now married! She whisks him off to the world of the dead. Somehow Victor has to get back to the living and find Victoria.

Edward Scissorhands (Amazon prime/ Disney + /Dvd)

A Halloween/ Christmas classic inspired by the story of  Frankenstein and his inventor. A scientist builds an animated human being called Edward. Unfortunately the scientist dies before he can finish assembling Edward, leaving him with scissor blades instead of hands. When the local Avon lady Peg calls on Edward she decides to introduce him to her family. Edward falls in love with her daughter Kim, however despite his kindness and artistic talent Edward's hands make him an outcast in the town.

History of Lipstick From Clara Bow to Marilyn Monroe

    Updated 2021

In 1912 Guerlain was able to package lip colour into a stick which made lipstick popular because it was more convenient and more accessible beyond the theatre and back rooms. While the increase in factories and populated cities caused pollution to spread, make up was being touted as a mask that could protect the face from all the dirt. Cosmetic adverts portrayed the mouth as an innocent hole sucking in germs and that cosmetic products such as lipstick could protect against this.

Applying lipstick was still a messy process as it was in cardboard tubes until 1915, Maurice Levy of the Scovil Manufacturing Company in Waterbury invented a metal case that was influenced by the shape of a bullet to contain this lip stick. Called 'Levy Tubes' they were two inches long with a plain dipped nickel finish with a lever on the side to move lipstick up the barrel. Since these tubes could be mass produced this new product was affordable to those in work as well as richer women in society. Some lipstick samples today resemble the original tubes albeit made from plastic. Later the lever was replaced by a screw thread inside that pushed the lipstick up.

In 1923 James Bruce Mason Junior patents the first swivel up lipstick. Mass production and lower prices resulted in a booming make up industry. During the 1920's there were a vast array of designs. The metal tubes were made from nickel, plated brass or aluminium. "There are rich designs in burnt aluminium and in silver of exquisite colour and finish; doubles, in which the slide moves both ways; swivel type; flat ovals and those with hinged caps to prevent loss at the top. America is foremost in their production, followed by Germany and then France." (Lipsticks, 1927, p. 421)

    Max Factor and Hollywood

Heat from the lights on film sets caused lip pomade to run and it was Max Factor who solved this problem by using greasepaint foundation around the mouth, covering the lip outline and then pressing two thumbs prints of pomade on the upper lip and two upside down thumb prints on the lower lip. Finally he used a brush to draw in the corners and contours. It served a functional purpose but concentrated on the centre of the lip, applying lipstick to the corners was considered to be vulgar.lMax Factor eventually renamed his products 'make up' rather than cosmetics, thus the term 'make up' once reserved for theatre was suddenly used by everyone as other companies followed his lead.

From Gibson Girl To Flapper Girl

Additionally Showbiz that once created disapproval was now seen as glamorous. Hollywood  beauty was now aspirational . Film magazines such as Photo Play and Motion Pictures showed what products film stars used.

    The 1930's

Despite the Great Depression The Daily Mail (UK) reported “in 1931 that 1,500 lipsticks were being sold to women for every 1 being sold in 1921!” Make up was one of the very few industries that came out of the depression richer than ever before. Women flocked to beauty salons, seeking respite from the dreary monotonous world. Later coined the Lipstick Index, it explains why women spend money on beauty products (mostly lipstick) during economic recessions- buyng a small indulgent item helps us to feel better.

As the roaring twenties was replaced by the Great depression, it's influence was felt in make up trends: lipstick went from carefree flirtation to a restrictive perfectionist ideal. Lips were angular and severe achieved by the use of  lip liners and lip stencils. Stars Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo popularised this look. Technicolor films meant that women could now see on screen and shop for the actual lipstick colour as well as applying the right lip shape.

look is that the shape of the upper lip mimics and is just as plump as the lower lip. The curve that begins at the low point of cupids bow and rounds out to the outer corner like the top of a heart, as opposed to the gradual decline of a natural lip

As Women became more visible in society entering workplaces in larger numbers than before  the first world war, make-up, once the sign of a disreputable woman, was now used by professional and middle class ladies to present their best face to society.

Advances saw perfume being added to lipstick and Helena Rubenstein developed the first clinical lipsticks with sun protectors.

    The 1940's

In America, make up was seen as important for good morale during WW2. The US director of Economic Stabilisation instructed factory dressing rooms to be stocked with lipstick to improve work productivity. Tangee, a leading make up company ran a 'War women and Lipstick' campaign' stating 'If a symbol were needed...of this courage and strength- I would choose lipstick.....A woman's lipstick is an instrument of personal morale that helps her to conceal heartbreak or sorrow, gives her self confidence when it's badly needed.' Lipstick made women look less tired. Women were encouraged to continue wearing lipstick and to send letters to the front with lipstick kisses to boost the morale of soldiers. Adverts warned women to buy sparingly. So women hung onto their lipsticks and savoured their use for nights out only and when nurses were evacuated by submarines they always escaped carrying their lipsticks.

In the United States, lipstick survived rationing after women protested the War Production Board’s plan to ration it. However the US War Production Board forbade companies developing new make up products. A concession was made for Elizabeth Arden who was commissioned to create beauty kits for the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve. The kit included two red lipsticks in Montezuma Red and Victory Red and rouge in a box with a mirror. The red lipstick matched the red on the uniform scarf, the cord on the hat and and arm. A winged letter A are on the closure of the box and metal tube.

Lipsticks tubes were manufactured in plastic tubes instead of  metal.

Unfortunately for women in the UK, lipstick production ground to a halt. The only way to obtain it was on the black market, buying secretly from bootleggers. women resorted to using beetroot to add colour to their lips. Rouge (blusher) was also in short supply in Britain and across Europe so women lucky enough to own a lipstick applied it to the cheeks as well.

In contrast to the long slim lips of the 1930’s full luscious pouts were popular.

    The 1950's
The end of war signalled a change in lipstick fashion, lips were overlined to look fuller and seductive symbolising good health an encouraging reproduction and re-population Hollywood film stars wore bright red lipstpick

The 50's gave birth to the 'teenagers' and advertisers now targeted girls as well as women, creating lipstick names such as 'Milkmaid pink' to appeal to them. Teenagers shunned traditional red lipstick perferring pastel tones like lavender, pink and peach colours. The Ronettes made wearing white lipstick popular as well.

In 1951 Lipcote was invented. It was a clear liquid that could be applied over lipstick to make lipstick last longer and prevent smears.

In 1952 Queen Elizabeth II asked Clarins to commission a lipstick for her coronation. The blue toned red was called 'The Balmoral Lipstick' named after her Scottish country estate.

American chemist Hazel Bishop developed the first lipstick that did not smudge and that lasted longer.
